Personal Environmental Wellness

We've been talking about environmental wellness on a large scale the last few days, but have you stopped to think and observe your personal environment?

When was the last time you really cleaned your apartment or dorm room? Clutter has an incredibly negative effect on your mind and psychological well-being.

Think of a time you may have visited a friend who maintained a spotless environment. How did you instantly feel walking in? How did you feel as your visit went on?

Now think of a time you visited someone's messy and dirty place. Think of the clutter, the dirty dishes, the dust, the trash, the smell(..s). What did it feel like to come into a space that had no room to breathe?

Sometimes, it may not be so obvious. It could be a fairly well-kept environment, for the most part. Yet we can all agree on the instantaneous difference from residing in a "fairly clean" environment to a SPOTLESS environment. Yes? Yes.

The same old excuse might be applied here by some of you: "I don't have time," or "I'm not a 'neat freak,'" or "I don't care."

Remember the #1 commonality between every single human being on this earth: We all have the same amount of time.

Don't fool yourself & say you  "don't care." Be honest. You might be a little lazy to care at this particular moment, but everyone gets tired of clutter and garbage sooner or later.

If you take 15-20 minutes (more or less the length of a Modern Family episode) to tidy up a little bit here and there, you avoid the massive pile-up of chores later on.

Yes, that's right. "Chores." --If this word has an adverse effect on you (admit it..you cringed a bit.), eliminate that negative association from your mind immediately. No one is around to scold you if you didn't make your bed this morning. Or if you haven't done laundry in over a month. Perhaps you could take on the belief that maintaining a clean environment is not (and has never been) about making someone else happy, but rather making yourself happy. Have enough self-respect to realize that YOU deserve to reside in an environment that promotes order, calmness, and overall well-being.

It's difficult to "find time" to meditate when your couch or your bed is covered in clothes, books, magazines, music, etc. It would be difficult to start on homework if your workspace drowns in papers, or if your workspace doubles as your eating space, relaxing space, etc. and the clutter is even worse.

Look around your environment. Don't make it about silly egotistical squabbles over which housemate has to clean what next. It's YOUR space. This is YOUR home while you go to to school here. Respect yourself enough to take care of it. Why wouldn't you want to?

For those of you that do maintain spotless environment at least 75% of the time --Bravo. Please feel free to chime in and offer extra tidbits of advice that may not be mentioned here.
What's your schedule like? How do you maintain a clean environment? Do you find yourself more or less stressed under clean working conditions? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Below are a few tips and articles to get you inspired and started on improving your environmental wellness today. Do a little at a time. Start to condition the healthy habit of staying tidy and neat.

*Wash dishes immediately after use.

*If the trash is full, don't try to keep stuffing it in or put it to the side. Take that as your cue to take the bag out. Give yourself the gift of clean air. Just take it out!

*Recycle. You have the fortunate opportunity of living in a city that prompts to go green and recycle. There are several stationary recycling and waste bins on the corners around campus. Take advantage.

*Clean up after yourself whenever you have the chance. If you were studying and you have books or lead sheets everywhere, gather them & stow them as soon as you're done studying. Now you have space to relax!
