Personal Environmental Wellness

We've been talking about environmental wellness on a large scale the last few days, but have you stopped to think and observe your personal environment?

When was the last time you really cleaned your apartment or dorm room? Clutter has an incredibly negative effect on your mind and psychological well-being.

Think of a time you may have visited a friend who maintained a spotless environment. How did you instantly feel walking in? How did you feel as your visit went on?

Now think of a time you visited someone's messy and dirty place. Think of the clutter, the dirty dishes, the dust, the trash, the smell(..s). What did it feel like to come into a space that had no room to breathe?

Sometimes, it may not be so obvious. It could be a fairly well-kept environment, for the most part. Yet we can all agree on the instantaneous difference from residing in a "fairly clean" environment to a SPOTLESS environment. Yes? Yes.

The same old excuse might be applied here by some of you: "I don't have time," or "I'm not a 'neat freak,'" or "I don't care."

Remember the #1 commonality between every single human being on this earth: We all have the same amount of time.

Don't fool yourself & say you  "don't care." Be honest. You might be a little lazy to care at this particular moment, but everyone gets tired of clutter and garbage sooner or later.

If you take 15-20 minutes (more or less the length of a Modern Family episode) to tidy up a little bit here and there, you avoid the massive pile-up of chores later on.

Yes, that's right. "Chores." --If this word has an adverse effect on you (admit it..you cringed a bit.), eliminate that negative association from your mind immediately. No one is around to scold you if you didn't make your bed this morning. Or if you haven't done laundry in over a month. Perhaps you could take on the belief that maintaining a clean environment is not (and has never been) about making someone else happy, but rather making yourself happy. Have enough self-respect to realize that YOU deserve to reside in an environment that promotes order, calmness, and overall well-being.

It's difficult to "find time" to meditate when your couch or your bed is covered in clothes, books, magazines, music, etc. It would be difficult to start on homework if your workspace drowns in papers, or if your workspace doubles as your eating space, relaxing space, etc. and the clutter is even worse.

Look around your environment. Don't make it about silly egotistical squabbles over which housemate has to clean what next. It's YOUR space. This is YOUR home while you go to to school here. Respect yourself enough to take care of it. Why wouldn't you want to?

For those of you that do maintain spotless environment at least 75% of the time --Bravo. Please feel free to chime in and offer extra tidbits of advice that may not be mentioned here.
What's your schedule like? How do you maintain a clean environment? Do you find yourself more or less stressed under clean working conditions? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Below are a few tips and articles to get you inspired and started on improving your environmental wellness today. Do a little at a time. Start to condition the healthy habit of staying tidy and neat.

*Wash dishes immediately after use.

*If the trash is full, don't try to keep stuffing it in or put it to the side. Take that as your cue to take the bag out. Give yourself the gift of clean air. Just take it out!

*Recycle. You have the fortunate opportunity of living in a city that prompts to go green and recycle. There are several stationary recycling and waste bins on the corners around campus. Take advantage.

*Clean up after yourself whenever you have the chance. If you were studying and you have books or lead sheets everywhere, gather them & stow them as soon as you're done studying. Now you have space to relax!

Frugal Mind, Frugal Life

Whether or not your Presidential candidate of choice was elected on Tuesday night, the growing uncertainty of our economy has everyone on the edge of their seats. You already learned, however, that focus equals feeling; and if you focus on being upset about the current economic struggles, you will continue to manifest personal economic struggle and uncertainty yourself.

Seek And You Shall Find

Ever buy a new outfit, or car, or CD, and suddenly you start to see it or a version of it everywhere you go? This all goes back to the same principle: "Where focus goes, energy flows" (Anthony Robbins).

From Tuesday's post, What is Your Story?, you challenged yourself to become aware of the limiting beliefs you habitually recite. These negative incantations, whether you're conscious of it or not, send biochemical triggers to your brain that push it to find more of what you're feeding it.

The good news: The same holds true for positive focus and positive peak states.

Take a deep breath. Allow your stomach to come out and your diaphragm to expand. Let it out with a long audible sigh. Relax. Now pay attention: The politicians and other elected leaders of our country DO NOT determine your personal finances or success. They simply create the template, but you choose the design. You have the tools. You have the power.

Instead of reciting that the economy 'sucks,' embrace this uncertainty with a renewed sense of adventure. Make a strong decisive move that empowers you. Take a strong step. Pump your fist strong in the air! Stand like Superman!!

Embrace your power of FREE WILL. Embrace your opportunity to be great.

The money is still out there. It's all about your strategy.

Are you willing to work as hard as it takes to be financially successful? Or will your story hold you back?

Find a successful role model that inspires you to grow and reach for the stars. Place their picture where you can see them often to remind you of what you're working for.

Why do you want to be successful? What else will you achieve or contribute to the world as a result of your success?

In today's world, it is no longer possible to achieve "good" results by simply doing "good" work.

Yes, you must work twice as hard. Three times as hard. Maybe four times as hard.

"The question isn't 'Can You?'...but 'Will You?'" (A. Robbins)

LiveWell could post a million articles about frugal living and budgeting tips, but if you have no actual drive to do it or no CONCRETE, clear reasons as to why you MUST (not 'should'), then is it any wonder why most people hardly follow through with what they say they're going to do?

Be clear with yourself and with whatever higher power you connect to.

What exactly do you want and why?
What are you certain this will bring you?
How will you add value to the world as opposed to waiting for the world to add value to you?

When you are clear and committed to your goals and dreams..it's then when your brain and mind will focus on ( & therefore produce) the strategy or strategies needed to help you attain them

Be your own #1 fan, and allow yourself to be successful.

"Get Out of Your Own Way."

What is your story?

The #1 reason why people never feel like they have enough time, money, or resources is because THEY KEEP TELLING THEMSELVES that they don't have enough time, money, or resources.

Much of our life ends up the way it is because we have adjusted.

Our brains were designed for survival. Not happiness. We systematically analyze the worst-case  scenario to prepare and protect ourselves from pain.

So it's all about what you focus on. Focus = Feeling.

If you spend all your time focusing on how you're broke, how you hate your job, how you can't afford this or that, etc. Pay attention to how your body and facial expressions react. Everything we focus on sends a biochemical trigger to our brain and it responds accordingly. If you focus on negativity, chances are your shoulders come down, your breath is shallow, and your face is tense.

And then what do we do on top of that? We TELL other people how much we're broke, how we hate our jobs, how we can't afford this or that, and it instantly magnifies the whole situation.

Give yourself an empowering story.

The story, true or not, that you tell yourself is what is affecting you the most.

What story is limiting you?

A true story does not necessarily empower you. Think about how different it feels to think, "This economy sucks," versus "The economy has had rough times before, and it will bounce back just like it always does."

This is NOT about simple "positive thinking." You could sit there and think "I'm happy, I'm rich, I'm happy, I'm rich" and your brain's going "lol..BS"

This is about changing the story that has been disempowering you, seeing things as they are and not worse than they are,  and allowing yourself to be successful.

The one commonality between all humans is time. The billionaires and millionaires of the world have exactly the same time you have. The difference is in their strategy.

Change your State.

Our state is determined by 3 things: our Physiology (the way we use our body), our Beliefs (what we tell ourselves to be certain), and our Focus (where our energy goes).

I mentioned that our physiology directly reflects the story we tell ourselves on a daily basis.

Think about about a time when you were really excited and happy. A time when you were so immensely grateful to be alive. Embrace it. Who was there with you? What were you doing? Smile as you enjoy this moment.

Notice your posture. Your breath. Your facial expressions. How different is that as opposed to when you think about something that saddens you? (I slumped my shoulders just typing that out!) What happens to your breath? Is it deep or shallow?

(For you cynics: if you "cant think of anything," take a deep breath.......and imagine you couldn't breathe anymore. Now you have something to be thankful for, right?)

What is the core essence of what controls the quality of your life?
The quality of your emotions

Sad people will find a way to be sad. Angry people will find a way to be angry.

Where you live emotionally and habitually will consistently determine the way you live your life.

In order for you to be pissed off, you must focus on something that will piss you off.

Take caution to the words you attach to your experience, because they will become your experience.

"God's punishing me!" versus "I was just lazy"

Think of all emotions that you experience on a daily basis. Just quickly jot them down.
Whether you have more positive or negative emotion has nothing to do with the circumstance. It has everything to do with what you habitually focus on to feel those emotions.

The ONLY thing keeping you from getting what you really want is the story you keep telling yourself about why you don't or can't have it.

Cut through all the excuses. Cut through all the stories. Get to the bottom line: You're Scared.

The 2 biggest fears embedded in the human psyche: 1) We are not enough, and 2) We won't be loved.

The wall that protects you from pain also imprisons you from growth.

Pretending that we are not afraid is a bunch of baloney! But what if we learned how to dance with our fears? If we learned to change our story and think, "Yes, I am afraid of failing. Yes, I am afraid of rejection. Yes, I am afraid of not being enough. BUT I accept the challenge. BUT I have been successful in the past and I will be so again."

Agree and see eye-to-eye with your fear. Align with your fear and you gain leverage over it. Fear will never go away. Bring a smile and excitement to your fear. Instead of focusing on everything that could go wrong, how about focusing on everything that could go right?

USE YOUR FEAR to move forward!!

LiveWell will be focusing on Financial Wellness this week, but if you have no control over your physical body or your emotions, you will never be able to control your finances.

It starts with YOU. Your STATE determines your behavior. If you walk around like you're broke, your brain will find a way to make this true. Make a radical change in your physiology. Wake up in the morning like you just won a million dollars. (I'm talking laughing, screaming, smiling, jumping for joy, etc. DO IT! Don't just think it! Embrace the feeling. Soak it in. --Imagine the impact that this kind of tone would have to your entire day.)

Begin to reconnect with your passion. What is your biggest dream? Why are you here? Why are you at Berklee? What are you really grateful for in your life right now? What is something you're really proud of?

So, if after reading all of this, you're still worried about who will win the election, you've learned nothing. Understand that there is an external world that you CANNOT control. But there is an internal world that we have all control over. Our minds. Our stories. Our focus. Our Beliefs. Our physiology. You have this incredible power deep within you called your soul.

Shake your body out. Expand your tummy outwards and take a deep beautiful breath in. YOU ARE ALIVE. Smile!!! You are alive!! It's 30 degrees outside, but you have a fire inside of you that has been aching to come out shine.

What story will you tell yourself today? How will you begin to empower yourself today? What kind of ACTION will you take? What decisions will you make?

Maybe today it won't be "I have so much work to do, and no time do it." or "It's not that simple."

Isn't it? Or is that what you have conditioned yourself to believe?

Maybe today your story will be "The day is young. I deserve to learn something today. I deserve to accomplish something today. I deserve to be successful today."

Your biography is not your destiny.

Your greatest power is the power of choice. It's not the events in your life that ultimately control you, but the decisions you make because of those events. Deciding not to do anything is a decision in and of itself.

If you decide to think that you're a screw-up, you will create screw-ups.

If you decide to think that you are powerful, you will create situations that empower you.

What kind of standard will you set for yourself today? What will your quality of life be today? What previously "impossible" thing just became possible?
